"Throughout our history, the sea has taken its cruel toll on Icelandic fishermen. Increased safety awareness has reduced this impact but only recently. Growing up, the schools in the main fishing towns had no classes that did not contain a pupil who had lost his or her father to the sea. The further back in time the heavier the toll. It wasn’t questioned much, and when the idea arose to teach swimming in the country the fishing industry opposed the idea, saying that knowing how to swim would only prolong drowning."
